Choose Your Own Adventure: Website Copy Edition

You’re a stunningly talented, beautiful, gorgeous website designer with an eagle-sharp eye for colors, fonts, brands, and all the fun stuff that goes along with a hot new website.

It’s almost launch day for your client, and everything just feels good.

The design is absolutely stunning, if I do say so myself, the colors are perfection, the layout feels like buttah, and the brand is a Pinterest board come to life. They’re already in your emails screaming “OMG I’M OBSESSED I LOVE YOU!!!!” with little heart eye emojis.

You’re both riding that sexy new website high. This is the fun part. This feeling is why you do what you do.

So you send the message. Just a quick little check-in:

Then the reply comes in…

  • You explain, kindly, that it’s not. They apologize. They mention the budget is already stretched pretty thin.

The excitement doesn’t totally disappear, but it feels…thin. You’re both asking yourselves, “What do we do now?”

  • Amazing!

They’re gonna DIY the copy, good for them! Monday rolls around. Then Wednesday. Then another “sorry, I’m almost there!!” message.

When the copy finally arrives, it’s a Google Doc full of ChatGPT paragraphs, no headline hierarchy, no CTAs, no keyword research, and a ton of words that somehow don’t actually say anything at all.

You’ll add it to the website, but you feel…not great about it.

  • You explain that they can, but most copywriters have their own in-depth messaging, branding, and voice process. Discovery calls. Questionnaires. Weeks of work.

The website launch will get pushed, and suddenly you’re talking about delays over something that should have been caught early.

You gently remind the client about your late work fees, and neither of you are happy with this solution.

(Yes, we ALL know that in an ideal world it goes branding → copy → website, but shit happens, y’know?)

No matter which path you choose, you end up in the same place: a finished design, an excited client ready to launch, and a website that can’t move forward because there’s no usable copy.

You don’t want to delay the website launch. You don’t want to send them toward a service that blows their budget or derails your timelines (because hellooooo, you’ve already got more clients scheduled and you don’t have time for this!!). And you definitely don’t want them to use ChatGPT copy with the personality of a dead fish.

And this is exactly where you call in your bestie for a rescue.

(and maybe a side of margaritas, chips, gauc, and home hot goss)

I need my bestie!

Enter: The Supporting Actress

You’re the leading lady, babe. I’m just here to make you look good (and maybe fix those flyaways a bit).

Every romcom has the best friend. And for web designers, that best friend is me (your favorite copywriter). I’m the Samantha to your Carrie. The Dionne to your Cher. The Ann Perkins to your Leslie Knope.

Basically, I’m your new go-to gal, late-night text messages included.

The Supporting Actress is a white-label copywriting rescue service for website designers who are this close to launching…except the copy never showed up.

Instead of panicking, pushing deadlines, or letting rushed DIY copy cheapen a stunning design, you sneak in your secret weapon. The words get handled. The site stays on track. And when your client asks how you pulled it off so fast, you get to smile and say…

Lights, Camera, Action! 🎬

I write custom, SEO-friendly website copy that fits the brand you’ve already built. No massive brand therapy sessions. No months-long timelines. No confusing your clients with a totally different process. Just solid copy that does its job so your client’s website can FINALLY go live.

You stay the hero. Your client gets a finished website that they literally can’t stop screaming about. And I happily fade into the scenery, knowing I saved the third act and made everyone look damn good doing it.

Where The Supporting Actress Fits Into Your Project Timeline

Design the website

Everything looks *chef’s kiss*. The brand is branding. The vibes are vibing. Absolutely immaculate.

Launch day approaches.

You’re already mentally writing the “we’re live!!” Instagram caption and you message your client that the website is ready for copy.

The OH F*CK moment

They don’t have any copy. Oh no. Oh no no no.

Assess your options

DIY copy (you’re not quite sure they can pull that off), hiring a traditional copywriter (slow), or quietly screaming into the void (tempting).

Cue 80s Shopping Montage 🎶

“You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall & Oates starts playing from somewhere.

We burst through the mall doors like we’ve known each other since middle school. Big smiles. Bigger confidence. Someone is definitely wearing a scrunchie.

Trying on outfits in front of a mirror. You hold up a going-out top. I nod enthusiastically. Yep, that’s the one. (This is also when you send over the brand notes.)

Orange Julius in hand, leaning against the railing, checking out cute guys, talking through your project like it’s no big deal. (I’m already mentally plotting those headlines.)

Food court table. Fries everywhere. You slide your laptop over. I’m already typing. (This is where the copy starts coming together beautifully.)

Back in the fitting room mirror. Final outfit reveal. We both grin. (The website looks INCREDIBLE.)

Now that we’re officially besties, let’s talk about how The Supporting Actress works–and what your client gets 👇

How We Lock This In (a.k.a. The “Are You Free?” Text)

The Supporting Actress is designed to be flexible. Sometimes I’m jumping in mid-panic. Other times, we’re planning ahead with a firm start and end date. Both work.

The only rule? Check in first.

Before you offer copy support to your client, send me a quick message to confirm availability. That way you can move forward confidently—no crossed fingers, no awkward backtracking.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Check in with me
“Hey Erin! Do you have availability to support a 5-page website starting [date]?”

  2. I confirm timing
Either it’s a yes, or I suggest the next available window.

  3. You offer the copy service to your client
Calm. Confident. Fully in control of the timeline.

Whether this is a last-minute rescue or something you want to schedule ahead, this quick check keeps everything running smooth and stress-free.

What I Need From You (So I Can Do My Thing)

A quick heads-up before you promise copy to a client. Just a fast availability check so we’re all aligned.

The page list + project details. Which pages we’re writing, the general goal, and all the need-to-haves and nice-to-haves.

Brand notes, mood boards, and website mock-up. Fonts, colors, logo, moodboards, approved site design…basically anything you’ve already whipped up for your client.

Client intake forms and meeting notes. I need alllll the details on your client. Honestly, the more you give me, the easier it is for me to nail their brand voice.

Quick Reality Check (Because We’re Besties Who Keep it Real)

This service does not include brand voice development, offer creation, audience research, or deep messaging strategy. You’ve already done the big-picture thinking, and I’m here to execute on-brand copy that fits the site and vibes you designed.

I’m Erin, your copy rescue bestie, professional checker of lipstick, and the friend who shows up with solutions and snacks.

I’ve spent the last decade writing content across wildly different industries, teaching uncomfortable topics without making things weird, and helping brands sound like themselves instead of a corporate chatbot.

Translation? I’m very good at stepping into the middle of a situation, reading the room, and getting shit done without turning it into a whole thing.

I don’t need to be the lead. I don’t want the spotlight. I just want your project to launch on time, your client to be obsessed with your work, and for you to look like the leading lady in your own romcom fantasy.

I’m a girls’ girl through and through, and I’m here to be your new bestie.

Questions?

  • Websites with more than 5 pages (or with extra complexity) need a custom quote.

This keeps timeline, scope, and expectations realistic. If a project is flirting with “bigger than usual”, I’m always happy to do a quick check-in before you commit.

  • Nope, I work with all sorts! And The Supporting Actress is designed to work for your clients, no matter what industry they’re in. I’m an equal access bestie!

  • Well, yes and no. My goal for The Supporting Actress is flexibility…basically, you can check-in for immediate copywriting support.

With that said, I’m happy to accommodate your clients ahead of time, especially if you have a firm project start/end date.

  • Since this service is fully white-label and designer-led, I won’t talk to your clients directly.

No client calls, no direct communication, and my name won’t appear in any client-facing materials (unless there’s some reason you reeeally need me to communicate directly).

From your client’s perspective, the copy is simply part of your process.

  • I invoice you directly, and you invoice the client however you’d like. Easy peasy!

  • This service works best when you’ve already guided your client through brand positioning, offers, site structure, and strategy.

I slip in at the last minute to execute the copy fast AF.
